What if the biggest factor shaping your financial decisions wasn't your income, your budget, or even your investment strategy?

What if it was the beliefs, experiences, and messages about money that you've carried with you for decades?

On a recent episode of Finance, Fitness & Finesse, I sat down with Dr. Joaquin Wallace to discuss a concept that has the power to transform the way we think about money: the Financial Genetic Code.

Dr. Wallace, author of Generational Wealth Begins with Generational Knowledge, has spent years helping individuals and families understand how their financial behaviors are shaped by both internal experiences and external influences. As someone who has grown from his mentorship, I have seen firsthand how powerful this work can be.

His teachings are an important part of Dimensional Wealth’s financial literacy and wellness programming. Most recently, I am incorporating concepts from Generational Wealth Begins with Generational Knowledge into my work with Cunningham Township's Careers in Motion program, which supports individuals seeking greater economic stability and workforce readiness. Through this collaboration, participants receive training in job readiness, financial literacy, and other essential life skills while exploring how their financial beliefs, behaviors, and experiences influence their opportunities and decision-making. Dr. Wallace's framework helps create a deeper level of self-awareness, allowing participants to better understand their financial story as they work toward long-term personal and financial growth.

The Financial Genetic Code refers to the deeply rooted money beliefs, habits, and attitudes we develop through our upbringing, culture, family dynamics, personal experiences, and environment. While our actual genetics may influence personality traits and risk tolerance, our Financial Genetic Code influences how we save, spend, invest, communicate, and make financial decisions throughout our lives.

The Generational Wealth Model and Financial Genetic Code developed by Dr. Joaquin Wallace, author of Generational Wealth Begins with Generational Knowledge. This framework illustrates how inherited beliefs, financial trauma, financial healing, financial literacy, and generational knowledge work together to influence long-term financial wellbeing and wealth creation. The model demonstrates that generational wealth begins with understanding and transforming the financial narratives, behaviors, and experiences that shape our financial decisions.

Many of us inherit more than physical traits from our families. We inherit money stories.

Some people grow up hearing that money is scarce and must be protected at all costs. Others learn that financial success determines personal worth. Some witness financial conflict, secrecy, or instability, while others observe healthy financial communication and planning. These experiences often become the invisible framework through which we view money as adults.

What makes Dr. Wallace's work so impactful is that it goes beyond awareness. He helps people identify the origins of their financial behaviors, understand how those patterns show up today, and create healthier pathways forward.

One of the most important takeaways from our conversation is that generational wealth is not simply about passing down assets. It begins with passing down knowledge.

Financial literacy, healthy money conversations, emotional awareness, and intentional decision-making are all forms of wealth that can influence future generations. While these lessons ideally start within the family, mentorship, community, and trusted professionals can also play a meaningful role in helping us rewrite financial narratives that no longer serve us.

If you've ever wondered why you make certain financial decisions, struggle with financial anxiety, avoid money conversations, or feel stuck in patterns you can't explain, this episode offers valuable insight into the connection between financial psychology and financial well-being.

Understanding your Financial Genetic Code may be one of the most important steps toward creating sustainable change for yourself, and for future generations.
